Misciagna Challenge Scholarship Fund
Established in August 1999, throught the generosity of retired Altoona businessman Anthony Misciagna, the Misciagna Challenge Scholarship Program was organized and is supported and administered by the Diocese with limited financial assistance from the separate Foundation for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.
The Mission is to provide economically disadvantaged and socially at-risk students with the opportunity to choose a value-centered Catholic learning environment in Diocesan elementary or high schools and to grow as lifelong Christian learners who are encouraged to overcome challenges, obstacles and adversit they may encounter in life. Scholarships are awarded annually to eligible students, regardless of their religious preferrence.
Many scholarship recipients come from single-parent homes with histories of challenges such as mental and physical illness or disability, drug or alcohol addiction, criminal activity or chronic unemployment. The program allows eligible students to have a choice in education through attending a Catholic school, being exposed to the value-centered, Catholic learning environment and allowing greater student satisfaction. It is the founding donor and Diocese's belief that a small, Catholic school setting with rigorous academics and one-on-one attention will be the avenue to success for participants.
Eligible students for consideration include any child who attends or would like to attend a Catholic school in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. Applicants need not be of the Roman Catholic faith to be eligible. Applicants must demonstrate documented financial need and academic motivation. While past academic performance is considered, it is not the sole, or the most important, criteria for selection. A student with great desire and average grades, given other criteria, could receive a scholarship.
